Mes recherches sur Diderot (futur livre avec Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chef) devait m\u2019emmener in\u00e9vitablement au ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Orquevaux<\/strong>, fief de la famille Caroillon de Vandeul<\/strong> en Haute-Marne.

Contrairement au philosophe Denis Diderot<\/strong> qui vivait chichement, ses descendants n\u2019\u00e9taient pas d\u00e9pourvus quand la bise fut venue\u2026
La fille de Diderot \u00e9pouse en 1772 un Langrois \u00ab capitaine d\u2019industrie \u00bb, lequel, avec ses trois fr\u00e8res, se constituera, avant et apr\u00e8s la R\u00e9volution, une \u00e9norme fortune (pas toujours de fa\u00e7on tr\u00e8s honn\u00eate, on peut le dire, y\u2019a prescription).
Albert Caroillon de Vandeul (petit-fils du petit-fils de Diderot) fit b\u00e2tir l\u2019actuel ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Orquevaux <\/strong>en 1897, dans le style Napol\u00e9on III<\/strong>, sur un domaine abritant un ch\u00e2teau plus ancien et \u00ab la forge de Jacquot <\/strong>\u00bb, domaine achet\u00e9 en 1810, par Abel Caroillon de Vandeul<\/strong>, mari d\u2019Ang\u00e9lique Diderot<\/strong>.

Ainsi, \u00e0 la mort d\u2019Ang\u00e9lique, le ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Orquevaux abrite le \u00ab petit tr\u00e9sor \u00bb de la famille, c\u2019est \u00e0 dire : les meubles, tableaux et archives du philosophe qui seront dispers\u00e9s, en 1911, \u00e0 la mort du dernier Caroillon. C\u2019est la famille Levavasseur (descendants de Diderot \u00e9galement) qui h\u00e9rite alors du tr\u00e9sor et qui prot\u00e8ge une partie des archives dans son ch\u00e2teau des Ifs en Normandie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, le ch\u00e2teau d\u2019Orquevaux<\/strong> semble avoir trouv\u00e9 sa v\u00e9ritable fonction et abrite en r\u00e9sidence<\/strong> des artistes plasticiens, musiciens, danseurs<\/strong>, de toutes nationalit\u00e9s, dans une osmose qui fait r\u00eaver gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 Ziggy Attias<\/strong>, son directeur, et sous le regard attendri de Denis Didero<\/strong>t dont le buste tr\u00f4ne dans le salon !

Histoire du domaine d’Orquevaux<\/strong>
Le domaine, ancien ch\u00e2teau et la forge de Jacquot, et appartenait au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle \u00e0 Louis Antoine Crozat (1700-1770), baron de Thiers, seigneur de Lafauche, Vignory, Semilly, Sexfontaines et Marb\u00e9ville, militaire et collectionneur d’art fran\u00e7ais. Il passe ensuite aux mains de Victor-Fran\u00e7ois , duc de Broglie et mar\u00e9chal de France, et de son \u00e9pouse , Louise Augustine Crozat de Thiers .
Nicolas Billot rempla\u00e7a Pelgrin dans l’administration des forges d’Orquevaux vers 1787, propri\u00e9t\u00e9 du duc de Broglie.
Nicolas Billot, fermier d’Orquevaux, prend possession du domaine et des forges en 1798, suite au s\u00e9questre, quitte \u00e0 indemniser les anciens propri\u00e9taires quelques ann\u00e9es plus tard.
Claude Poussy, fermier de Dancevoir, en fait l’acquisition en 1791.
Abel CAroillon de Vandeul ach\u00e8te le domaine en 1810.

My research on Diderot (future book with Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chef) inevitably took me to the castle of Orquevaux, stronghold of the Caroillon de Vandeul family in Haute-Marne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike the philosopher Denis Diderot who lived poorly, his descendants were not destitute when the north wind came \u2026
Diderot’s daughter married in 1772 a Langrois “captain of industry”, who, with his three brothers, would constitute, before and after the Revolution, an enormous fortune (not always in a very honest way, one can say it, y ‘ a prescription).
Albert Caroillon de Vandeul (grandson of Diderot’s grandson) had the current Ch\u00e2teau d’Orquevaux built in 1897, in the Napoleon III style, on an estate housing an older ch\u00e2teau and “the Jacquot forge”, purchased in 1810, by Abel Caroillon de Vandeul, husband of Ang\u00e9lique Diderot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thus, when Ang\u00e9lique died, Orquevaux castle housed the family’s \u201clittle treasure\u201d, that is to say: the furniture, paintings and archives of the philosopher which would be dispersed in 1911, when the last one died. Caroillon. It was the Le Vavasseur family (descendants of Diderot as well) who then inherited the treasure and who hid part of the archives in their Ch\u00e2teau des Ifs in Normandy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the castle of Orquevaux seems to have found its true function and houses in residence plastic artists, musicians, dancers, of all nationalities, in an osmosis that makes you dream thanks to Ziggy Attias, its director, and under the tender gaze of Denis Diderot whose bust takes pride of place in the living room!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of the Orquevaux estate
The estate, former castle and Jacquot’s forge, and belonged in the 18th century to Louis Antoine Crozat (1700-1770), baron of Thiers, lord of Lafauche, Vignory, Semilly, Sexfontaines and Marb\u00e9ville, soldier and art collector French. It then passed into the hands of Victor-Fran\u00e7ois, Duke of Broglie and Marshal of France, and his wife, Louise Augustine Crozat de Thiers.
Nicolas Billot replaced Pelgrin in the administration of the Orquevaux forges around 1787, owned by the Duke of Broglie.
Nicolas Billot, farmer of Orquevaux, took possession of the estate and the forges in 1798, following the sequestration, even if it meant compensating the former owners a few years later.
Claude Poussy, farmer from Dancevoir, acquired it in 1791.
