Son engagement europ\u00e9en est fond\u00e9 sur son cosmopolitisme : \u00ab Le monde entier est notre patrie \u00e0 tous \u00bb, proclame-t-il dans la <em>Querela pacis<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erasme \u00e9labore une conception de l&#8217;homme qui se d\u00e9finit <strong>ind\u00e9pendamment de sa foi religieuse<\/strong> et est <strong>dou\u00e9 d&#8217;un libre arbitre<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00c9rasme pr\u00f4ne l\u2019importance de l&#8217;<strong>\u00e9ducation et du savoir<\/strong> et est convaincu que l&#8217;\u00e9ducation est la cl\u00e9 du progr\u00e8s humain. Il propose une m\u00e9thode d&#8217;\u00e9ducation \u00e9l\u00e9mentaire qui repose sur une <strong>confiance fondamentale<\/strong> dans les capacit\u00e9s intellectuelles et cognitives des enfants quant \u00e0 l&#8217;apprentissage et publie en 1530 <em>De pueris instituendis&nbsp;<\/em>(De l&#8217;\u00e9ducation des enfants).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00c9rasme, bien que li\u00e9 \u00e0 des cercles de pouvoir, n&#8217;h\u00e9site pas \u00e0 critiquer les d\u00e9rives de l&#8217;autorit\u00e9, tant spirituelle que temporelle. Il d\u00e9nonce la corruption des clercs, l&#8217;hypocrisie des moines et l&#8217;arrogance des th\u00e9ologiens, tout en critiquant l&#8217;accumulation de richesses et les ambitions politiques de l&#8217;institution eccl\u00e9siastique. L&#8217;ouvrage est d&#8217;ailleurs interdit en 1559 par l&#8217;\u00c9glise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sans jamais \u00eatre ouvertement h\u00e9r\u00e9tique, \u00c9rasme se permet une critique s\u00e9v\u00e8re des dogmes et des pratiques religieuses qui ont perverti le v\u00e9ritable esprit du christianisme.<br><em>L&#8217;\u00c9loge de la folie <\/em>est ainsi un plaidoyer pour la tol\u00e9rance et l&#8217;autocritique. En se moquant de tous, y compris de lui-m\u00eame, \u00c9rasme invite chacun \u00e0 prendre du recul par rapport \u00e0 ses propres certitudes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00c9rasme prend d&#8217;ailleurs ses distances avec les id\u00e9es de Luther lorsqu&#8217;il r\u00e9dige en 1524 <em>De libero arbitrio<\/em>, trait\u00e9 th\u00e9ologique dans lequel \u00c9rasme d\u00e9fend la notion du libre arbitre
